The following includes typical events that may occur prior to laparoscopic surgery; however, since each patient and surgeon is unique, what will actually occur may be different.
Preoperative preparation includes blood tests, medical evaluation, chest x-ray, ECG and other tests, depending on your age and medical condition.
You may require tests specific to your disease e.g. ultrasonography, CT scan, MRI etc.
After your surgeon discusses the potential risks and benefits of the operation with you, you will need to provide written consent for surgery.
Your surgeon may request that you completely empty your colon and cleanse your intestines prior to some surgeries.
It is recommended that you shower the night before and on the morning of the operation.
You would be advised not eat or drink anything except medications that your surgeon has permitted you to take, with a sip of water on the day of surgery, depending on your procedure.
Drugs such as blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel, etc) and anti-inflammatory medications (arthritis medications) may need to be stopped temporarily for several days to a week prior to surgery. Please inform your surgeon if you are on any of these medications.
Quit smoking, as smoking is shown to impede healing and recovery after surgery, along with being responsible for respiratory complications.
Arrange for any help you may need at home, during your recovery after the surgery.
