WHAT IS PHLEBOLOGY?

Phlebolgy is that medical speciality devoted to the management of venous disorders.

It usually involves management of Chronic Venous Insufficiency which may include the following:

  • Telangiectasia (spider veins)
  • Reticular veins
  • Varicose veins
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Post thrombotic limb
  • Chronic venous edema

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs either due to reflux, obstruction or a combination of both.

A Phlebologist is a medical specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of venous origin. This must be distinguished from vascular surgeons, who deal with the vascular system, both arteries and veins.

There are several Phlebology Societies that are associations for ‘vein-care’ professionals. these include physicians (general and vascular surgeons), interventional radiologists, cardiologists, registered practicing nurses etc.

Dr Avinash Katara visited the Whiteley Clinic (Guildford, UK) in April 2013 to attend the Angiodynamics International EVLT Training Academy workshop under the able guidance of Prof Mark Whiteley, who is one of the pioneers and leading authorities in the field of minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins. He spent valuable time with Prof Whiteley, getting to know the nuances, enhance his expertise and gain valuable understanding in the field of minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins, spider veins, pelvic congestion syndrome etc. This included a multi-modality approach to the disease, including laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, injection sclerotherapy, microphlebectomies etc.

Dr Avinash Katara was accepted as a member of the prestigious American College of Phlebology in May 2013. The college acts as a forum for physicians and other health professionals to exchange medical knowledge, it also offers education and training, and seeks to improve the standards of medical practitioners and the quality of patient care.It is comprised of more than 2,000 phlebology professionals who are setting the pace and direction for the growth of the field of phlebology.
